Jane Balentine

Jane has deep local roots and a passion to pass her family’s winemaking tradition on to the next generation. She grew up in St. Helena, the great-granddaughter of a Sonoma County winemaker, Leonardo Dioguardi, and the daughter of writer and historian Lorin Sorensen. Jane studied English Literature at Oxford University in Oxford, England, and received a BA in Communications from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. After college, she moved to San Francisco to work for IBM, but once she and William married, in 1988, the couple returned to Napa to be closer to their families. Jane became Controller/HR Director for Codorniu Napa, now Artesa Winery, and has consulted to other wineries in finance and accounting. Jane’s business expertise proved invaluable when she and William discovered the ghost winery for sale next to St. Clement Winery in St. Helena, where William was winemaker.

After purchasing the historic 1873 building, they embarked on a five-year journey to restore the old stone building and neglected gardens, plant the vineyard, and establish the brand.

Today, Jane runs the business side while bringing her superb design insights to projects large and small. Most recently, she’s taken the lead on a major project to restore the Spring Mountain property William Cole Vineyards acquired in 2023. In her rare spare moments, Jane enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time in the great outdoors.
