Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

Headshot for Destin Charity Wine Auction

Mark O’Connell currently owns and operates Domaine Clos de la Chapelle in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. His career represents a unique fusion of high-level financial strategy and a lifelong dedication to the artisanal rigors of Burgundian winemaking.

Mark’s professional foundation began at Kenyon College, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1980, followed by an MBA from the University of Chicago. He then embarked on a 32-year career in the financial technology industry, eventually serving as President of a leading firm. During these decades in the corporate world, Mark spent his time away from the boardroom deeply immersed in the study of fine wine, a passion that took root during his undergraduate years.

In 2010, while still leading his fintech company, Mark transitioned from collector to steward by purchasing the founding parcels of the Domaine. Upon the successful sale of his firm in 2012, he bypassed traditional retirement to commit himself fully to the vines. To complement his practical experience with technical mastery, Mark completed an Oenology Certification from the University of California, Davis in 2017. This formal training, combined with a reverence for local tradition, allowed him to assume the active role of Winemaker.

Today, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle consists of 12 acres spread across 16 distinct vineyards. The estate is notable for its concentration of quality, featuring 13 Premier Cru and Grand Cru plots in Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, and Corton.

Under Mark’s leadership, the winery remains 100% estate-grown, ensuring total control from bud break to bottling. By implementing organic and biodynamic practices, he has revitalized historic soils that have been planted for centuries. Now in its second decade under his guidance, the Domaine has earned a reputation for producing elegant, site-specific wines that honor the heritage of Burgundy through modern precision.
