Vintner Spotlight: Anthony and Olive Russell of Hamilton Russell Vineyards
Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of the closest vineyards to the sea in the southern wine estates of Africa. Having pioneered viticulture and winemaking just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, Hamilton Russell utilizes the cool climates of South Africa and Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to produce what are widely considered the best wines in South Africa and among the finest wines in the world.
Originally founded by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975, the undeveloped 420 acre property was specifically selected as the vineyard site due its its cool weather and southern location. After years of building up the vineyard, extensive soil research was initiated to identify a special class of soil for their wines- nearly 130 acres possesed the stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil that was optimal for the expressive wines being created. With all vineyard planting now limited to this progressive soil type, Tim’s son Anthony Hamilton Russell took over the vineyards in 1991 and narrowed the range of wines produced to Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay- committing to only work with grapes from their terroir. After registering Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an estate, he fine-tuned their production to create the best wines in the region.
“We are not so much using Hamilton Russell Vineyards to make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as we are using Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to express the beauty and personality of Hamilton Russell Vineyards.” explains Anthony.
Anthony and his wife, Olive, currently work with winemaker Emul Ross and viticulturist Joha Montgomery to create limited yields with intense worldwide demand for both their elegant, highly individual Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They also support the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Pre-School, a project run for the local farm community located on the Hamilton Russell Vineyards. The non-profit school provides top quality education for underprivileged children through donation, fundraising, and support from Hamilton Russell Vineyards.
Anthony and Olive will be pouring their exquisite wines at a 13th Annual Destin Charity Wine Auction Patron Dinner hosted by Jeff & Doreen Eckmann with Gary & Carolyn Deitzen at the Henderson Beach Resort and Spa alongside Chef Todd Gray of Washington D.C.'s Equinox Restaurant.
